7 Tips for Saving on Your Energy Bill

When Canadian winters hit, the cost to heat your home can skyrocket if you are not cautious. To avoid paying out hefty fees to stay warm, here are some reebee approved tips for saving money on energy costs.

  1. Cut costs on laundry by reducing heat whenever possible and using cold water to wash clothes. Switching to cold water reduces almost 90% of the energy used while washing clothes. Lower the cost of laundry more by investing in a drying rack. Who says you can only hang dry clothes in the summer?
  2. Don’t run the dishwasher on with a half empty machine! Maximize on the available rack space whenever possible and run the dishwasher in the evening.
  3. If you’re not in the room, don’t leave the lights on! And if you haven’t yet, switch to energy efficient LED Light Bulbs to further save on energy. Not only are LED lights brighter than traditional incandescent bulbs, they also last about 10x longer than and use 1/3rd of the electricity.
  4. Cut down on your shower time. Treat yourself to a lengthy shower once in awhile, not every day. The longer your shower, the more hot water you will use and the greater your bill will be at the end of the month. Hot water is also known for drying hair and skin out the longer you stay under it. Save your money and your skin with a cooler and shorter shower!
  5. Cooking dinner for one or two? Avoid the oven and use smaller appliances to get the job done. Toaster ovenscrock pots, and microwaves use less energy to cook food and tend to cook things faster than traditional ovens. This means food is in your belly sooner rather than later.
  6. Manage your thermostat by lowering it two degrees. For the extra ambitious, try lowering it by 5 degrees to save even more.
  7. Switch to motion sensor lights. Avoid leaving bedrooms to bathrooms to outdoor lights on longer than what’s necessary.
